A few figures are portrayed on the deck of a steamship in the nightly twilight with the sun setting in the background. The ship passes the coast of an island with a black and white horse. Kerkovius undertook several extended voyages between 1935 and 1939 in Central and Eastern Europe. This painting was made around 1938 and is probably set in the area of the Princes' Islands in turkey. The 'colorful clouds' in the upper margin are painted in characteristic Paul Klee colors which Kerkovius liked to use in her 1930s compositions.
The painting is mentioned in the catalogue raisonné by Uwe Jourdan.
